"MK Confidential" opens on the line outside the Orange County Courthouse, which for six weeks has been forming at three in the morning, people waiting for a seat in a room they have only watched on television. Twenty-five floors up, on July 5th, 2011, Judge Belvin Perry, Jr. opens the verdict form, reads it, then reads it again, to be sure. Jose Baez holds Casey Anthony's hand.

Not guilty of first-degree murder. Not guilty of aggravated child abuse. Not guilty of aggravated manslaughter.

Megyn Kelly takes up the question people have argued about ever since: why did this jury acquit?. Juror number three, a nursing student named Jennifer Ford, says Casey’s bad behavior is not enough to prove a crime. Twelve people will give twelve different answers for how Caylee Marie Anthony died. Judge Perry was prepared to tell the jurors before deliberations that “how” is not an element of the crime. The prosecution never asked.

Thirteen months later, two men in Phoenix recover an Internet search record the sheriff's office had missed. On the last afternoon Caylee was seen alive, someone on the Anthony family computer searched a misspelled phrase: “foolproof suffocation.” Nothing establishes whose hands were on the keyboard, and the jury never heard it. On Suburban Drive, a man named Wally Goodnough keeps bringing wooden crosses to the spot Caylee Marie’s body was found. Someone keeps taking them. Wally keeps coming back. This is Episode 5 of the Casey Anthony story.

"MK Confidential" fades in on a motel room in Daytona Beach, Florida. On January 22nd, 2009, George Anthony takes about seventy pills, drinks as much beer as he can, and begins writing an eight-page letter he never finishes. Losing his granddaughter has brought him to the edge. Two and a half years later, a prosecutor reads that letter aloud to the twelve people deciding whether his daughter is responsible.

Megyn Kelly tracks the defense case through the trial. Lead defense attorney Jose Baez tells the jury that Caylee was not murdered, but instead drowned in the aboveground pool behind the family's house, and her grandfather found her. He accuses the men in the Anthony house of abusing Casey. Both men deny it, and no witness ever supports it. Cindy Anthony testifies that searches for “chloroform” on the family computer were hers, made while she looked into why her Yorkie kept eating bamboo leaves in the backyard; her employer's records put her at the office both afternoons.

Then the state gets the last word. A detective searches the hard drive all day and overnight. Inside the courtroom, Judge Perry finds absolutely no evidence behind the abuse allegations and bars them from closing argument, while letting the drowning stand on the strength of photographs: a two-year-old climbing a pool ladder, and opening a sliding glass door by herself. And prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick, the last lawyer to speak, puts two photographs on the screen and leaves the jury with a single question: whose life was better after Caylee’s death? This is Episode 4 of the Casey Anthony story.

"MK Confidential" follows the case to trial. In her opening statement, prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick doesn't start with chloroform or duct tape. She begins with the story of a little girl, walking the jury through every day of Caylee's short life before landing on the thirty-one days no one reported her missing. Defense attorney Jose Baez fires back with a name the prosecution never said out loud: Roy Kronk, the meter reader who found Caylee's skull.

Megyn sifts through the physical evidence piece by piece. A trunk that smelled like nothing to Casey's boyfriend— but smells like “death” to a tow-yard owner three weeks later, a hair traced back to someone from Caylee's maternal line inside that trunk, and an online search about how to make chloroform. Meanwhile, three medical examiners looking at the same skull, are unable to agree on whether that tape held Caylee's jaw in place or was never holding anything at all.

By the time the state rests, it has built a case on a mother's lies stacked one on top of another — leaving the defense one afternoon to explain them away. This is Episode 3 of the Casey Anthony story.

"MK Confidential" opens on the front door of Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez. Sheriff’s deputies knock on the door and ask to search her house for a missing toddler. She has never met Casey Anthony, or her daughter Caylee. She's cleared by the police that same day — and then her phone number gets out, the threatening calls start. She loses her job and her reputation. All for sharing a name with someone Casey Anthony invented.

Megyn traces that invented nanny back to 2006, two years before Caylee disappears. Casey describes a babysitter her family never meets, attached to a man Casey barely knows and a little boy who does not exist. On June 16, 2008, Casey tells her father that Caylee will be staying overnight with “Zanny.” It the last day George sees his granddaughter.

Thirty-one days of excuses follow, as Casey empties a friend's checking account, tattoos “Bella Vita" on her shoulder, and parks a white Pontiac beside a dumpster, with the car seat still in the back. Finding the car is just the beginning, as Casey’s lies begin to fall apart. This is Episode 2 of the Casey Anthony story.

"MK Confidential" examines the story of Casey Anthony. It all starts with a certified-mail notice that sits unnoticed on a pink front door for days— eventually leading to an impounded Pontiac Sunfire with a stench oh-so-familiar to Casey’s former deputy sheriff father. George Anthony’s granddaughter Caylee hasn't been seen in over a month.

Megyn reconstructs the night Casey’s mother, Cindy, makes three separate 911 calls in ninety minutes — the first about a stolen car, the last about a smell she can't explain — all while her daughter Casey sits in the next room insisting Caylee is just fine. “MK Confidential” opens on a mother and daughter enjoying pizza and sodas outside of a California Costco. A distant man looks on. The mother polishes off her soda and chucks the cup into the trash as they leave. Within seconds, the man closes the gap to the trash can and slips the cup into a manila envelope. He is an “operator” in a secretive division of the LAPD. They are investigating one of their own. The cup has her DNA.

Megyn follows four homicide detectives from Van Nuys as they reverse-engineer a cold case, knowing the murderer is a woman. They winnow the list of possible suspects in Sherri Rasmussen’s life to five, and from there, to two —  women for whom Sherri would have opened her front door, with a motive for murder. DNA from a bite on Sherri’s arm rules out one. The other is a match.

The killer is LAPD detective Stephanie Lazarus. Depending on whom you ask, Stephanie is  an acquaintance, a friend, or an on-and-off lover of Sherri’s husband. The detectives ask her directly: do you know John Ruetten? This is Episode 3 of the Sherri Rasmussen story.

“MK Confidential” picks up nineteen years after Sherri Rasmussen's murder, when a rookie crime lab analyst picks up a cold case that seems simple: one blood type, one stain, an easy match. Instead, Jennifer Francis finds a bite mark swab that no one can locate — not the LAPD, not the coroner's office,  not even the property log. She tracks down the man who sealed it in 1986, and asks him not to forget about her.

Megyn traces the two decades in between: a parking ticket handed to grieving parents who offered to pay for DNA testing themselves, a box of critical evidence signed out in 1993 and never seen again, and a detective who closes the file with one sentence: no additional leads. Then, in 2005, the bite swab turns up in a freezer, and the DNA inside it belongs to a woman. Four years later, a detective reading the case notices a bloody fingerprint on stereo equipment, and the burglary theory falls apart in his hands.

By the end, investigators have a name — and she has a badge number. This is Episode 2 of the Sherri Rasmussen story.

“MK Confidential” looks into the murder of Sherri Rasmussen, a case that will remain cold for twenty-three years, and it all starts with a brown leather purse. In February 1986, a Van Nuys retiree answers her door to find two strangers holding a purse. Inside it, a driver's license belonging to her 29-year-old neighbor Sherri Rasmussen, a newly married nurse. Six hours pass before anyone finds her brutally beaten and shot dead on her own living room floor.

Megyn looks back at what detectives had within those first hours and chose not to follow: a bloody fingerprint on an untouched stereo that's never photographed or booked into evidence, a jewelry box left undisturbed, marks on Sherri's wrists suggesting she was bound, and a bite mark swabbed by a coroner's investigator. 

None of it fits the burglary story LAPD settles on. Meanwhile, somewhere in a basement freezer, a swab of that bite mark waits nineteen years for science to catch up. This is Episode 1 of the Sherri Rasmussen story.

“MK Confidential” closes the Scott Peterson case — and then reopens it. In the courthouse garage, jurors climb aboard Peterson's boat, testing what it would take to tip it over. Two of them won't be there for the verdict. The jury loses its foreman and another member mid-deliberation, gets rebuilt twice, and convicts within eight hours of starting fresh for the last time.

Megyn walks through the verdict and eventual death sentence, including Sharon Rocha's raw, unscripted testimony at the penalty phase. Then, she follows the appeals, centered on a flawed jury screening process, juror letters to Scott Peterson post-conviction, and alleged new evidence.

Two appeals are still pending. Twenty-three years later, Scott Peterson follows them from prison, and his wife’s exact cause of death remains a mystery. This is the finale of the Laci Peterson story.

“MK Confidential” follows a lead that the jury never fully hears. In the late morning of December 24, 2002, a neighbor spots three men and a van across the street from the Petersons, that don't look like they belong there. Laci Peterson is last seen twenty minutes later.

Megyn tracks down the witnesses one by one: a mailman who says the Petersons' gate was open and their dog, which barks at him every single day, stays silent. Six people who say they saw a pregnant woman walking a golden retriever that same morning, after Scott had already left for the marina. Plus, a hypnotized witness, a burglary across the street, a van found burned nearby, and interview tapes marked for destruction before the trial even begins.

None of it proves that Laci was around that morning. But it raises the question about what the jury was ever allowed to consider. “MK Confidential” retraces what happened that Christmas Eve in 2002. Four police officers walk into a quiet Modesto home, drapes drawn, a Christmas tree surrounded by presents, and a nursery already stocked and awaiting a new baby. The woman who lives there is eight months pregnant, and missing. Her husband says he had gone fishing roughly ninety miles away.

“MK Confidential” returns right in the thick of a new case: New Year’s Eve, 2002. A young mother gets a phone call from her new boyfriend, who’s celebrating at the Eiffel Tower, on the other side of the world.
